As a result of the 2026 A-Z Challenge, I’ve been blessed with a few new followers. Casting aside their sense of fine literature to take a peek into the deranged goings-on at Penwasser Place, I felt it a good idea to bring them up to speed with what makes me tick.

Today, though, I’m going to explain where a strange little custom of mine has come from. Or, using proper English grammar, “from where has a strange little custom of mine has come.”?
Well, now, that sounds clunky.

"Well, it was proper English, boyo. Just to be safe, knuckles if you please."
No, I don’t mean giving the toilets at Home Depot a test drive.
Anymore.
Anyway, I’ve been taking photographs
of me tying my shoe, quite often in front of famous monuments, locales, bag
ladies, etc.

This first started as a suggestion from my dear departed stepfather. A man with a quirky a sense of humor, he said that taking a picture of me tying my shoe would be funny. Little did he know that it would wind up being a “thing” for fifty years.
So, without further adieu, may I
present some of the more significant shots of me with loose laces.
If you’ve been a longtime follower of this blog, first, my sympathies. Second, you may know this already. But, even if you do, I’ve included new pictures and captions. So, this is like a used car. With a new car freshener.

Rome, Italy (Not to be confused with Rome, New York) You always remember your first. A friend took a picture of a friend taking a picture of me adjusting my shoes.

DMV, North Haven, Connecticut. 1978 Might I draw your attention to my uber-sexy knee socks.

Disney World 1981 The socks remained. But, I added the uber-suave yellow ballcap. I was such a chick magnet.

Dead Sea 1997 How I managed to convince a couple friends to do this is astonishing. Or why we were tying our bare feet.
Progressive Field, Cleveland 2010 They were still called the Indians and they won. Notice no more kneesocks. Still not a chick magnet.

Kutztown, Pennsylvania 2014 I managed to talk the mascot of Kutztown University into taking a picture with me because "it's my thing."

Unless I'm committed first.

This reminds me of that popular account where a man posted a pic of his shoes every day. At least yours switches up the location. If you aren’t opposed to AI, you could have a lot of fun creating images of you tying your shoe next to a dino, etc.
ReplyDeleteI'm certainly not opposed to AI. It's just that, with these, I'd rather do them on my own rather than in front of a computer-generated image.
DeleteThat sounds like a fun hobby (?) that I think deserves more mention. I've always found quirky things like makes life fun. Interesting locations & surroundings.
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely day.
I tied my shoe this Saturday in front of a bonfire at my nephew's birthday party. I believe people thought it was weird.
DeleteThat is a lot of shoe tying. Sorry, I don't think I ever had a thing. Except verbal - in every song, swap out the word love for slug. Makes the music more interesting.
ReplyDeleteThis only scratched the surface of my shoe-tying bits. Yes, I have a problem.
DeleteI'm going to tell my brother about this. I doubt he'll steal it, but it might give him some weird ideas. (He has us take a group picture every time we get together. Every. Time.)
ReplyDeleteMy youngest brother's "bit" is to photo-bomb every group picture. In fact, my brother took a group photo of my nephew's friends at his son's one year birthday party. Guess who was mugging in the back? Yep.
DeleteHow fun! I loved the pictures.
ReplyDeleteIt certainly is a topic of my conversation during my therapist visits.
DeleteWith all that shoe tying I can't believe someone hasn't suggested that you need shoe string locks...those little plastic things that cost next to nothing on Amazon and you can set them in them morning and by night your laces are just as tight as they were when you locked them in place.
ReplyDeleteThey have...LOL. Also velcro.
Deletepictures make me smile....
ReplyDeletethere are many "great places' to handle shoes....
Right?
DeleteI wonder how many doorbell cameras have caught me tying my shoes during neighborhood walks. Perhaps someone out there is writing a blog with pictures of me tying my shoes in front of their house. Stranger things have happened. Like your post.
ReplyDelete"Strange" being the operative word...lol.
DeleteThat is so cool the mascot would join in this! Kinda makes me wish I had a tradition... at least an interesting one.
ReplyDeleteI really did say it's my thing...lol.
Delete50th Class Reunion should be a hoot...make sure to tie your shoes there and get lots of pictures...we were supposed to have a random reunion last year because we were all turning 60... never happened. Life gets in the way I guess. Maybe we'll try again for the 45th year reunion (if there's anyone left).
ReplyDeleteCheers.
Tying my shoe at the reunion. Great idea!
